BAME Icon of September 2021- Matthew Henson
Henson was the first African American Arctic Explorer and made six expeditions in 18 years.
Henson left education at the age of 12 and was later hired to assist Robert Peary on expeditions. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole in 1909 declaring ‘I think I am the first man to sit on top of the world.
Henson showed that African Americans could break through the glass ceilings and be successful in their chosen fields.
