Curriculum Content

Intent

The English curriculum will take students on a learning journey, in which all students will acquire the communication and critical thinking skills that will enable them to become successful and confident members of, and contributors to, society, and which gives pupils access to the accumulated knowledge that is part of their cultural heritage and identity.

 

Year 7

Modern novel, modern drama, poetry, reading and writing a range of non-fiction texts, language change. 

Year 8

Mythology, gothic literature, animal rights, unseen poetry, reading and writing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, Romeo and Juliet. 

Year 9

Modern novel, narrative writing, non-fiction writing, modern drama, power and conflict poetry.

Year 10

GCSE Language: reading comprehension of fiction and non-fiction texts, descriptive, narrative and opinion writing, formal presentation.

GCSE Literature: writing analytical essays on ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Power and Conflict’ poetry, unseen poetry and ‘An Inspector Call’s or ‘Animal Farm’.

Year 11

GCSE Language: reading comprehension of fiction and non-fiction texts, descriptive, narrative and opinion writing, formal presentation.

The English Department offer Theatre visits for students in all year groups, both in school and through external trips;

We offer students the ability to join the Renaissance Reading Programme, where they can celebrate becoming Word Millionaires;

Every year, we celebrate World Book day, with all students.

Our enrichment programme is currently under review, as we intend to be able to offer extensive opportunities for the 20/21 academic year.
