Curriculum Intent - Drama

We believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious Drama curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which immerses students in a range of styles. The curriculum will encourage students to become confident and independent thinkers, who will be able to create original work and critically analyse professional and non-professional repertoire. Students will have an appreciation of their own work and that of others, always demonstrating respect and empathy.

Our Drama curriculum will give students the opportunity to:

  • develop creativity through understanding the benefits of participation in the arts, performance and creativity during their school journey
  • develop co-operation & collaboration
  • develop confidence in communication through developing vocal and physical skills
  • explore social issues though drama to develop tolerance and understanding
  • be exposed to different peoples’ perspectives and emotions on issues and events
  • be exposed to and use subject specific vocabulary effectively
  • study the history and influence of different practitioners on drama
  • develop an ability to evaluate their own and others’ work

Curriculum Content

Year 7

In Year 7, students are introduced to the 3 core skill areas of devising, vocal and physical skills.  Focus is given at the start of the year to ensuring students are able to remember and explain what the skills in the 3 core areas are.  This is because these are the foundation building blocks of a solid, quality education in drama. Towards the end of the year, students will have had opportunity to move on to independently select and apply appropriate skills; and start to be able to analyse and evaluate in simplistic terms their own work.

Year 8

In Year 8, students revisit the 3 core skill areas of devising, vocal and physical skills.  Focus is given, to students being able to recall the 3 core areas from previous learning in year 7, but that they learn to use these areas with greater exploration, combining with more serious young adult themes.  The aim is for students to develop so that using these skills becomes more habitual, to enhance their performance work.

Year 9

In Year 9, students revisit the 3 core skill areas of devising, vocal and physical skills.  Focus is given so that students are able to recall the 3 core areas from previous learning in 7 & 8 and now use them habitually to enhance their performance work, demonstrating that they are now able to select the skills independently to create effective theatre.
